Neverland: The Return to the Lost World (New Pics@pg22)

Postby aquarajan » Fri Apr 18, 2014 5:59 am

The Story

Once upon a time there was a little boy who fell in love with fishes. He started making friends with them and for years found happiness and solace in revolving in their aquatic world. In four years time he got so obsessed with them that he started neglecting his high school studies unlike any other normal boy and his parents after a lot of patience shown finally gave his world marching orders! The boy gave up his world to his friend who still takes care of it while he decided to return to his own land. Almost 15 years later he found his world! He named it NEVERLAND, the land where he would play with flying fishes sitting under the lily leaf and plan to defeat Captain Hook with the help of Tinkerbell and the lost boys! It's his return to the world, the land of the 'boy who never grew up'!!!

The Fact

My first attempt at planted tank, a comeback to the aquatic world after almost 15 years. It's not just an attempt of making my dream come true but also a deep plunge into the favorite world after a lot of patience, planning, effort and studies. But still it's a long way to go and a lot more to learn...

I am grateful to my elder brother who gifted me the tank and my dear wife for gifting me the hood and helping me buy plants and other necessities whenever I run short of funds!!!

PS: It took me a lot of courage to post this journal in this forum with people around with loads of experiences and vast knowledge. I would truly appreciate every single suggestions, criticism, advice or appreciation. They all will help me grow and raise my learning curve!

The Making

Step 1: Creating a barrier along the base of the front and side glasses with top up substrate (Here it is 2mm river sand gravel). For tanks with DIY substrates this hides the layers of base layers of soil to give an uniform look.

Step 2: Adding the layer of Prodac Humus as base substrate.

Step 3: Adding Soilrite as second layer substrate.

Step 4: Adding a handful of Laterite as third layer substrate. This layer has been topped up by 2mm river sand gravel.

Step 5: Placing and positioning the wood and rocks to form the hardscape. Trying to maintain the Golden ratio and a bit of perspective in attempt of making the scape less flat. In my case the depth of the tank being 12", it was difficult bringing out definite layers of background/midground/foreground, but I tried my best arranging these elements and playing with perspective.

Step 6: Completing the dry planting, tying Java moss to the wood and planting Amazon swords. Then filling 20-30% of the tank with water. Increasing/reducing or re-positioning the plants as required.

Step 7: Filling up the rest of the tank and letting the substrate leach. The filter is turned on and the CO2 is being dispersed through the filter powerhead. These images were taken 1 hr. after setting up but the water still was cloudy!

I will try and keep everyone updated with the progress as I currently don't have internet at home and it's easier to post/comment using office internet than uploading pics etc. Meanwhile as mentioned earlier everyone's welcome to shower me with suggestions, criticism, advice or appreciation (will prefer this order though)!!!

Thanks and Regards
Rajan

Love your tank mate. Absolutely beautiful. Would make some of the small sized bichirs or channas feel at home in there ;)

i really love tanks like these which are really good examples of first planted tanks.
now all you need is to trim off amazon sword leaves and see them generating new ones.

Thanks a ton Najib, Suraj and Akash...

Rahul, thanks a ton man for the support and advices that makes me learn. Yes, I have been trimming off sword leaves recently and the plants are coming to good shape now with plenty of new leaves.
