Working with Excel\Glut: update Pg 14

Postby sahajaydip » Sun Oct 12, 2014 7:16 am

Hi Everybody!!
First thing I would like to tell you that I am not very experienced guy in planted tank. Few months ago when I started with a 1.5 ‘(approx 10 US Gallon) tank I did not have any idea of planted tank. Days were passing ,interest was growing and started browsing more and more to discover the mystery. last six months were almost a crazy period for me. Lots of study on fish and planted tank ,browsing hundreds of forum for fish keeping ,visiting lots of fish store, watching fishes ,calling different fish store multiple times asking information for fish, plants etc, browsing online stores those were my major activities for past six months. My first tank (1.5 ‘ ) tank was very un-organized mostly due to my lack of knowledge on this field though it helped me a lot to learn some basic of fish keeping and planted tank. So when I thought to set up another tank I decided to documents some steps as a lesson learned. It started well but after few days I found I am quite lazy to note the tank progress on regular basis. I thought KAC must be the best place to document my tank progress and interaction with other members might motivate me to update my tank progress regularly and in addition to that it will also helped me to get experts advice on time.

For this tank I had few goals-
1. It should be low maintenance –
2. Additional CO2 should be minimal
3. Algae should be minimal
4. Water change should be minimal(Once fully established maybe 20% twice a month)
Initially I was inspired by Diana Walstad method and thought to go without added CO2.I had some success in my previous tank with some easy growing hygro, rotala and amazon sword without EI dosing and added CO2.But this time I thought to start with excel as I have planned for more plants. I may reduce the dose once fish stocking will reach its maximum limit. If possible I will try to establish optimal balance between fish and plants. If anybody in this forum have a good success with Diana Walstad method please share your thoughts.

Currently my new tank is only 7 weeks old and I am trying to put tank specs and its different phases in chronological order -

Starting with-

8/24/2014-
Introduced 2 zebra and 3 molly for cycling .Hope my driftwood and few plants from other tank will help to trigger Nitrogen cycle. Started dosing Excel.

8/25/2014-
Power filter seems too strong for this 20 G .Its keep on uprooting my Echinodorus tenellus and Eleocharis Japan

8/26/2014-
2 casualties .1 zebra and 1 Molly jumped .Not sure this is for very high current or some problem in water

8/27/2014-
Exchange the power filter from buro da. New one seems perfect for 20G.
Partial water change. May need to test water in case of more casualties

8/28/2014-
Fish seems doing well-
All Plants doing good except Egeria densa.
Egeria densa melted and it’s an Excel effect(Lesson Learned). Move back the remaining Egeria densa to my 10 G(not dosing excel there )

9/5/2014-

New leaf of anubias seems burning. Reduced light from 2*36 W PLL to 1*36 W PLL and 1 *18 W PLL

Here are some images of my tank after 7 weeks.Any thoughts and suggestions please share...

Very nice and neat tank! (just my personal opinion) the verticals on the right hand side is looking a bit odd. Would've looked better with a complete relief.
Cheers,
