Suggestions required for DIY Fixture for T5-HE

Postby subhadeepdas » Sun Nov 01, 2015 2:32 pm

Hello KACians,

I need your suggestions here. I’ve planned to set-up a 2 feeter planted tank. So, I’ve bought 3 T5 HE tubes (osram) as light source. Since, my current set up is open hood, so I need a DIY fixture to hang those lights. So, it would be very nice if you could kindly suggest any design which can be built up easily.

Thanks in advance.

No, there is neither any possibility to hang it from ceiling nor I can drill in wall. Basically I've invaded our dinning table to put the tank there. Now, if I demand to drill on wall nearby, there is a chance of civil war. :D

That's one awesome looking tank you've got, and such tanks look best open IMO. Have you tried working with P.O.P sheets for a DIY fixture? This is what most of the LFS's use to prepare aquarium hoods. Thet are easy to work with, all you need is some feviquick and a paper cutter.

POP sheets needs heating element to bend and chloroform to join not feviquick. anyways, since u cant hang or drill wall then the only possibility remains is an inverted canopy.. the canopy can be either put on the tank using a leg standing on two side glasses of the tank, or you can make a custom stand to hang it from above.

The idea sounds interesting. What is the material you propose to prepare the canopy? If possible I'll go with the former option.

the easiest to work with is alluminium sheet.. get a 26" square sheet cut out from shop.. make a 8" x 26" reactangle made from a carpenter shop.. add 2 half circle on the shorter sides.. pin down the aluminium sheet on top forming a cover.. your canopy is ready.. u can add couple of more wooden bars lengthwise to fix the lights
