Wild Betta brownorum

Postby avik » Wed Aug 12, 2015 8:02 am

These fishes are very special to me as I have seen their habitat, and collected these spp. from the wild (not these two specimens though). The time I went there, Malaysian Borneo, the habitat had very little water, in fact the water could not be seen in some places, but when we placed our feet, it got wet until ankle length. It was covered with moss, and some shrubs, there were lots of pandan leaves, if you know them you can understand how difficult it was to enter into the forest. I saw this plant is typical in all betta habitat. Anyway, I shall share the trip report with you soon. As of now, let's discuss about the Betta Brownorum. This fish is real tiny, really colorful and has some personality; they are not technically shy anymore, but could not be handfed yet. I am now keeping them in a small breeding tank, only one pair with an almond leaf. I saw the male building nest yesterday night, they are staying together most of the time, even eating live grindal worms together. Occasionally they are being fed on live bbs. I do not change water much, just siphon the floor sometimes. Will keep you guys updated as soon as I see anything interesting in their tank.

Actually very difficult to sex them, for me it's the dorsal fin which makes the difference, unlike other coccina complex wild bettas where we can sex them seeing the anal fin.

The blotch in the male is glowing now in the spawning mode.

It is an abslute stunner, for me far better than the much hyped Betta macrostoma. What parameters are you keeping them in?? Did you get a chance to measure the parameters of their natural habitat?

Vijendra, now they are with me at pH 6, the water is not black as such unlike my other coccina tanks. But they are showing great color, building nest. The habitat pH was 4.5, have seen much acidic habitat of wild betta. I shall share the trip report with you afterwards.

Wasim, they are better be kept as pair in a 1 ft cube or even in smaller tank. I dont say they are unavailable in Kolkata, but these are very rare and expensive.
