My low tech excel based planted tank

Postby Ramiz » Fri Apr 05, 2013 5:03 pm

After a long period of trial and error, I have been able to upgrade my tank status to "watchable". x_x .Off course its nothing compared to the beautiful tanks that has been displayed in this forum.Lekin kya kare, "Tera hain par mere hain". :p .

Thought I might share this with you guys. Its a low tech excel based tank. I have been following Tom Barr's article on such types of tanks and can only come up with the word "genius" for him.

Specs: 30"(L)x18"(L)x18"(H)
Lights : 2X36W Osram PLL ( I had a 23W Havell's CFL but removed it thinking in might be responsible for diatom growth.. still experimenting")
Plants are mainly less demanding one : Vallisneria, Hygrophilla, Cryptocoryne wendtii, Lily, etc... :-? :-? :-?
Fishes are neon rainbowfish and mollies with their babies.

Micro: Seachem flourish comprehensive
Macro: KNO3, K2SO4, KHPO4.
Supplement : Seachem Flourish Excel.

I heard that KNO3 is banned. Can anyone tell me any alternative to it?? I am already close to finishing of the amount thats there with me... :-ss :-ss :-ss

KNO3 is not banned. you can get it easily in chemical shops in college street.
good beginning and you can try something more demanding ones considering the fact that you are using seachem ferts.
with that amount you could have got a pressurized C02 as well.

Thank you all for your appreciation.

@rahul... Can you please tell me the name of at least one shop where I can get KNO3. It would reduce my hassle when I will go for buying it. And about CO2 the thing is that...frankly speaking I am scared. I am not sure if I would be able to maintain balance in the tank and may have to go through endless woes to get everything right.

there is nothing to get scared of co2, use of it keeps algae at bay and ofcorse promotes growth..you can use co2 to upto 40 ppm , may be more..nothing will happen to your fauna..just don't use too much..2 bps with an inline diffuser will be safe IMO

Ya but @soham.. I guess I have to redo the entire setup starting from changing my substrate, transfer my fishes to some other place for a month or so and may be upgrade the lights. The very thought of this all is putting me back....
